Product Categories

SKUs are not added to product categories, only products are added to categories. Adding your product to categories will make it available within your online store when customers search for products. If you fail to add it to categories, it will not be available on the website.

Add SKU Checklist

  • Add SKU product information
  • Add to one or more categories

Our shopping cart software offers two powerful ways to manage products.  Working with SKUs is one of two ways, and if you're able to work with them we suggest you do.  Many merchants will only offer stand alone products, that do not have relationship to other products. Some retailers/wholesalers will offer correlated products.  If you want to offer "Candles" for sale in multiple colors, this type of product can be setup as either a Product ID or SKU setup.

Assigning SKUs

Like Product IDs, it is a good idea to have a personal formula when creating SKUs for items. SKUs should only contain alpha numeric characters, never any spaces or special characters. The examples below show the Product ID incorporated into the SKU, though this is not required one might use this method to help stay organized.

Examples of Good SKUs
Item SKU
Large T-Shirt SHRT123LRG
Red Candle CNDL123RED
Pink Blanket BLKT123PNK

Definitions

SKU SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit which is a number that is assigned to one item and one item only. SKUs are not always physical items, but more appropriately anything that can be billed. Merchants assign their own SKU numbers, and each merchant has a personal approach on how they assign those SKU numbers.
